Everyday Metal headed out to The Bergy Bandroom in Brunswick for Black Rheno’s “The Bad Ass East Coast Tour” to celebrate their latest single “A Bad Ass Love Song” and there’s nothing I love more than to drag my old ass out to Melbourne’s Northside to celebrate some kick ass local heavy metal talent and Black Rheno nailed it with this killer lineup. A Gazillion Angry Mexicans infused the room with an atmospheric morphing of genres, Ghostsmoker got dangerously close to using up all the heavy which Munt would later on jest ‘leave some for the rest of us!’, Black Rheno rallied the troops injecting some high-octane energy into the crowd and of course the brutality reigned supreme with Munt closing off the night.
This was actually my first time experiencing the first two bands in the lineup, based on their name alone I wasn’t sure what to expect from A Gazilion Angry Mexicans, but I enjoyed their twisted dark rock foundation that was artfully laced with a twang of country (amongst other things). The album Blood Rainbow was the main feature of their set with the tracks Trail of the Cloven Hoof, Mercury and the Old Gods and Plume and with their newest single release Providence getting a spotlight.
For the next set, I can definitely say I walked away a fan, the blackened doom sludge that oozed from Ghostsmoker’s set was supremely satisfying. The hulking four-piece showcased the tracks from this year’s album release Inertia Cult including Elogium, Bodies to Shore, Incarnate and before chugging through the last sludgy breakdown of Haven all the band members held up their beers in solemn cheers to the crowd.
Now usually by this time of night I would be struggling to hold myself upright and longing for bedtime but it’s impossible to not get infected by the enthusiasm and raw energy that Black Rheno brings with them to every gig. The boisterous trio filled their set with hilarious banter, wild antics and big moves with singles including Snake Will Rattle, No Time For Numb Nuts and of course their new single A Bad Ass Love Song. These Sydney locals might not take themselves too seriously but they manage to create a seriously big sound.
‘If you don’t know who the fuck we are, we’re Munt’, for their first time back performing in a year Munt embodied their intimidating on stage personas throwing death stares at the crowd and gave an absolutely savage performance with tracks including The Vengeful March, Children of Delirium, Zero Sum, Communion of Thorns and Apostate Sermon and last years single release Somapsychosis. The night wasn’t complete until our virgin ears were gifted with two brand new tracks Dominion and A Dual of Fractures from Munt’s upcoming debut album which will be released later this year, so get ready!
