The members of Melbourne’s very own Heavy Choir have gone rogue! If you haven’t heard of Heavy Choir yet, they have been uniting metal heads since 2021 with members from all across Victoria and from all walks of life. They rock out, harmonise and have fuck loads of fun but on Saturday night at the The Gem Bar, the choir went solo for the first ever Heavy Choir Rock Revue.
The cozy bar in the back streets of Collingwood was packed to the brim with supportive patrons ready to have a good time, and a good time was had by all. The cheering and applause continued all throughout the tight set of 13 back to back performances. Starting off with a bang (of the drums that is) was an acapela crew dressed in Viking garb for Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song. The room clapped along to Dance Macabre by Ghost and couldn’t stop themselves from singing along to Extreme’s More Than Words, while soloist Jaime rocked his rendition of Bob Dylan’s One More Cup Of Coffee which left the room buzzing.
Up next was soloist Christine who offered a beautifully rendition of Hand That Feeds despite apparently having only learnt it days prior and we were all delighted by the costumes adorning the Atreyu duet performing Lead Sails and a Paper Anchor with Scott as blood splattered pirate and Rachel the dreamy mermaid rocking turquoise locks. This was succeeded by the satisfyingly deep clean vocals of Theo complimented by growls from Jaimie for Madder Mortem’s Waiting to Fall. Also major props have to be given to the theatrics of the Eye Of Ra and to the trio performing Death Diviner who integrated some gory blood gushing effects into the act.
The final performance of the night was Jon with his accoustic version of Going Down To Die by Danzig. The soloist really carried the emotion of the song and delighted us with an encore of Paranoid by the legendary prince of darkness Ozzy Osborne which sparked full audience participation. Congratulations to everyone who performed at this metal variety show, the night was filled with excellent music and thrilling theatrics coupled with a lot of love and support for the community.
