Since their last visit to our shores for Good Things Festival with a side show at the humble Stay Gold in Brunswick, Imminence has skyrocketed in popularity bringing them back to Australia on their debut headlining tour Return to the Black. We entered The Forum catching the tail end of The Breakdown Podcast who were entertaining the crowd with their version of ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ featuring an appearance from the lead vocalist and violinist of Imminence Eddie who blindsided a very blindfolded fan.
Sydney’s rock metal quartet Inertia were joining the Return to the Black tour bringing to the stage their big band energy kicking it off with Dying To Let You Go, Leviathan and Dominion but not before igniting a circle pit ‘We’re not gonna fuck around!’ Exclaimed lead vocalist Julian Latouche. The set featured a slew of tracks from their 2024 album release Second Shadow including Static that sparked the mosh to jump and the title track that put hands in the sky but it was Parallels from the 2022 album Memoria that was dedicated to the cheers from the crowd when asked ‘Anyone seen Inertia before?… Fuck yeah!’. It’s safe to say that Violincore has definitely found a special place in the hearts of Melbourne metalheads with Swedish alternative metalcore band Imminence requiring a much needed upgrade from the Northcote theatre that unfortunately could not hold the ever increasing numbers that are making up their devoted fanbase. The grand stage of The Forum however was a far more fitting venue for a band with such an intriguing and dramatic presence. The spotlights ignited as Imminence wasted no precious time at all launching into their set with Temptation, Desolation and the satisfyingly heavy track Heaven Shall Burn, and for Beyond the Pale, Eddie commanded ‘Melbourne…… Open it UUUUUUP!’.
The theatrics continued throughout the thrilling set with the core 5 piece ensemble joined by their female backing vocalist for Death by a Thousand Cuts and to the delight of the entire crowd, myself included, for Come What May the surprise guest Violinist Tim Charles from Melbourne’s very own established progressive metal band Ne Obliviscaris graced the stage sharing a beautiful hug with Eddie after completing a beautiful violin duet. The instrumentals continued to astound me with guitar solos for L’appel du Vide which also featured the now very well known move made famous by the video clip God Fearing Man where lead guitarist Harald his face veiled by long, dark angelic locks who draws his bow upwards like a samurai draws a sword creating a sound that beckons warriors to battle. ‘Melbourne… make some fucking noise! We have been Imminence, from Sweden with love!’ As they closed off the night’s journey with The Black I could see from the faces in the crowd and the energy that buzzed in the room that not a single devotee was left wanting.
