At the end of a pretty lousy week, all I really needed was to get a decent dose of dirty deathcore, and a mouthful of metal, and lucky me, on a Sunday night at Max Watts we had Thrown.
Outsider from RADelaide opened the evening, bringing two-stepping and boundless and contagious energy, ‘Step up, step up, step up! Don’t you fuckin’ let me down‘. The quartet showcased all the tracks from ’Surrounded by the Ashes of Others’, had Jordan Dunbar from Starve do guest vocals for Let It Consume You from 2022’s Reflection Of You, and had some delectably deep throw-downs for Calloused and No Remorse.
Collectively we then headed down a dark and grinding path led by the Brisbane quartet Diesect, yet another impressive local support, from Shadows Follow 2023 EP they played Carbon and Paralysis, while also treating us to some newer tracks Second Death released last year and Too Many Scars which had only been released days prior ‘Do me a favour… If it’s not too hard, spin this room for me!’ The mosh pit continued to rage through Loose Ends and Snake Eater.
Heavy drums introed the German supports Half Me as the vocalist Christopher Zühlke sounded ‘Melbourne, make some fucking noise’. The beginning of the set sparked some pretty fierce circle pits for Wraith from the 2023 album Soma, and Fatalist from the most recent EP, while a guest vocalist joined the band on stage for Concrete Ceiling but before the end of the set concluded the mic was lowered into the pit served up as an offering for one lucky devotee in the front row to take over the vocals.
What finally followed was an impossibly tight 40-minute set that unleashed brutality on the venue which left the pit utterly obliterated. The Swedish band Thrown played to a sold-out headlining show here in Melbourne despite this being only their second visit to Aus, the first supporting Alpha Wolf on their tour just last year. As they powered through track after track celebrating the album release Excessive Guilt including Backfire, Nights, Bloodsucker, On The Verge and So Done, the fans threw down hard, continually crowd surfed their way over the barrier and belted out the lyrics to each and every song.
In such a short time this band has developed an impressively loyal legion who have adopted each track as anthems. Other tracks such as Parasite, New Low and Dwell from the 2022 release Extended Pain accompanied the action-packed set. I’m sure we’ll be hearing from Thrown again soon!
Huge thanks to the crew at Max Watts, Destroy All Lines and Bigmouth PR.
