The beloved, prodigal daughter made her way back to her second home to finally see the DEAD KENNEDYS with the ever incredible MANNEQUIN DEATH SQUAD.
In my years of gig venturing, I have not seen a venue that lively and buzzing with excitement. The sprawling congregation of punks was a spectacle! Seeing liberty spikes and bike chain necklaces did warm my plain-clothed punk heart.
Diving headfirst into the night, we were met by the formidable force of our first act, the powerhouse duo, MANNEQUIN DEATH SQUAD. Hailing from the local scene, this electrifying pair delivers a thrilling blend of rock and punk, crafting a sound that’s as infectious as it is explosive. A healthy combination of high energy, aggressive and hard hitting rhythm, MANNEQUIN DEATH SQUAD expertly switched instruments to further push their incredible gritty sound. As a first time listener, I can guarantee you that this powerhouse duo means business. I found myself tapping my docs (Of course, I had to wear them) to their rollicking beat.
DEAD KENNEDY’s have been a staple in my musical diet since I was sixteen years old. For 40 plus years, this seismic band remained one of the most influential and politically charged bands of all time.
Unfortunately, Jello was not in attendance but the show we got was nothing short of memorable. Their set was a biting and satirical take on politics, consumerism and authorism aided by their iconic humour and ironic takes, DEAD KENNEDY’s had the venue shaking and swaying in happiness. Teamed with their heavy surf rock guitar elements, vicious bite-like delivery and infectious energy, DEAD KENNEDY’s delivered a memorable performance filled with fan favourites, hidden gems and added japes about the state of their home country.
The DEAD KENNEDYS are more than just a punk band — they are a cultural detonation. With a fierce blend of radical politics, sharp satire, and an unrelenting sound, they became a defining force in punk’s second wave. Love them or loathe them, they refused to be ignored and their message still resonates just as loudly today.
