Eora/Sydney-based alternative-metal band Aurateque have just revealed their captivating new single ‘Hurricane’ – produced by Steve Balbi, and mixed by Chris Blancato (Northlane, Reliqa).
‘Hurricane‘ begins with an inviting mix of sweltering guitars, subtle synthesisers and domineering drums, before the persevering vocals of frontwoman Lauren Coleman sail atop a drum-and-bass verse. A steady build-up paves the way for an imperious chorus, with rapid-fire melodies heightening the track’s urgency. Each section provides new elements of instrumentation, all while illuminating Lauren’s impressive vocal range and grit, providing a culmination of vehemence and intensity.
“‘Hurricane’ tells the story of the visceral back and forth of the toxic relationship within oneself. The second-guessing, the isolation, and the disbelief that anything will ever make sense. Lauren takes us through the journey of being stuck in the chokehold of these toxic patterns only to come around to acceptance in the end. The line ‘We don’t know who we are, I know I am nothing without you’ recalls that in the depths of self-doubt, the light of having comfort within yourself, even though you might be lost or confused about who you really are, is still important to have.”
Alongside the release is the provocative music video – filmed, directed and edited by Jack Fontes of Dunelabs. The video depicts the band performing the song in several ominous locations, with symbolic references to the song’s themes and influences scattered throughout. “The wine being poured and overflowing is a direct reference to an Angus and Julia Stone song called ‘Heart Full of Wine’,” the band explains. “He says in the song ‘with a heart full of wine, and nothing left to pour’; in the music video, the wine overflows and creates a mess which symbolises being drained and overflowing simultaneously. In the paint scene we see Lauren eating and vomiting the paint, chaotically spreading it all over herself. The paint symbolises the mask that hides the true self, and the chaotic back and forth between hiding yourself, and trying desperately to be yourself.”
To celebrate the release, Aurateque will be traversing the East Coast of Australia in May supporting Ghostseeker, performing at King Lear’s Throne in Meanjin/Brisbane, The Gasometer in Naarm/Melbourne and Waywards in Eora/Sydney. The band have previously sold out headline shows in Gomeroi/Tamworth, selling 200 tickets in the process, and have previously played with Patient Sixty-Seven.
Aurateque delivers a fusion of chaos and composure, blending elements of nu-metal, pop-punk and electronic music to create a radiating concoction. Combining eclectic vocals and palatable instrumentation, the band are a fresh new offering to the heavy alternative scene.
