Cover shot MAMMOTH WEED WIZARD BASTARD

There are some bands out there with some crazy names, Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard is definitely one of them.

But don’t pass them off as one of those gimmicky bands, this quartet from Wrexham, Wales produce some high quality intergalactic doom metal.

Yn Ol I Annwn (Return to the Underworld in Welsh) is the final chapter in a trilogy spanning from 2015 to 2019. This record introduces less heavy elements such as 70’s synths and the cello which gives this album a very well rounded feel. The intention of the release is to take you on a journey and for me, it did exactly that.

The opening track ‘Tralfamadore‘ brings you in softly before introducing their signature doom riffs on ‘The Spaceships of Ezekiel‘. I particularly liked the track ‘Du Bist Jetzt Nicht In Der Zukunft‘ which is dripping with spacey synths and the lead singer Jessica Ball‘s ethereal vocals serves as an interlude before it launches into the title track ‘Yn Ol I Annwyn‘. This song delivered an amazing guitar solo which was exactly what the album needed, its placement feeling very strategic.

The production on this record is outstanding. All the instruments are clear, the vocals are strong and effective and Yn Ol I Annwyn is a fitting conclusion. Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard should be very proud of this record.
