ALPHA WOLF – ‘Whenever You’re Ready’

Cover shot – ALPHAWOLF

Fresh off selling out Melbourne’s Forum in 24 hours, alongside the sold out sign hitting Adelaide and less than 200 tickets available for the remaining shows on their Half Living Things Tour, Aussie metalcore behemoths Alpha Wolf today unveil Whenever You’re Ready; a compelling and cathartic new cut taken from the band’s upcoming third full length album, Half Living Things due out Friday 5 April via Greyscale Records and SharpTone Records.

Pushing their own limitless boundaries and exploring new musical terrain, Whenever You’re Ready opens with hazy ambience before evolving with haunting beats and searing vocals, showcasing a bewitching new side of Alpha Wolf, built firmly around its soaring melodic chorus and stirring subject matter.

“Alpha Wolf likes to let our listeners expect the unexpected at all times and Whenever You’re Ready is a testament to exactly that,” shares the band of their brand new track. “We could feel the impact of this song from the moment the first chords were written.

“Dancing around on our melodic side, this song touches on the complications between people with a deep connection to one another and ultimately losing them, everyone has a story to tell in this regard and this is ours.”

On album number three, Alpha Wolf harness and heighten their trademark intensity, crafting the self-produced Half Living Things in 2023 entirely on their own terms. A collection of tracks that are simultaneously heavy, fun as hell, and beating with chugs, grooves, melodics, breakdowns and more, Half Living Things is a hard-hitting celebration of the entire Alpha Wolf sonic gamut that stings and salves equally with dazzling finesse.

Speaking on the new album, Alpha Wolf vocalist Lochie shares: “There can be no inner conflict without the constant tug of war between desire and disdain, the things you want versus the things you need, or the things that make you feel alive against the parts of it that do not. You cannot grow new parts without leaving the dead ones behind. You cannot be settled until you have truly known the opposite. Find out what makes you tick and just keep running around the clock until you’re happy enough to die.”

Never ones to do anything by halves, Alpha Wolf have relentlessly sharpened their trademark intensity over the years, from releasing their critically-acclaimed sophomore album A Quiet Place To Die amid the pandemic in 2020, snagging a #6 spot on the ARIA Charts and a nomination for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album at the ARIA Awards, to releasing a split EP, The Lost & The Longing, with Welsh rockers Holding Absence in 2022. And, as of 2024, the band are now ferociously approaching their third full-length album Half Living Things, due out on Friday 5 April.

Launching their own curated festival CVLTFEST in 2022, Alpha Wolf also continue to powerfully fly the flag for their own incredible wares as well as the local heavy music scene and exciting international acts, with CVLTFEST returning last month for its second edition to critical acclaim, headlined by Alpha Wolf themselves alongside friends EmmureCrossfaithOcean Grove and many more.

Ticking off their biggest North American run to date with Motionless in White and tearing up multiple stages as part of the inaugural Knotfest Australia last year, Alpha Wolf kicked off 2024 touring nationally alongside The Amity Affliction, and will embark on a massive North American headline run starting next month, supported by Emmure, UnityTX and Chamber, before heading to the UK to appear at Download Festival alongside Queens Of The Stone AgeFall Out BoyAvenged Sevenfold and more.

Hinting at things to come from their upcoming album via Bring Back The Noise, a neck-snapping party-starter, as well as the internet-breaking collab single Sucks 2 Suck with legendary rapper Ice-TAlpha Wolf are also set to whip Australia into a frenzy this August, headlining their Half Living Things Australian Tour alongside supports The Devil Wears Prada (USA), Invent Animate (USA) and thrown (SWE). Melbourne and Adelaide shows have already sold out, with less than 200 tickets available for remaining shows in Perth, Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane.

INFECTIOUS GROOVES – The Inspector Cluzo, support act confirmed

Cover shot – INFECTIOUS GROOVES

The legendary Infectious Grooveswill be touring Australia at the end of March! The funk-metal supergroup will be appearing at Byron Bay Bluesfest  as well as headlining their own massive headline shows in Melbourne Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney!

INFECTIOUS-GROOVES-AUS-TOUR-POSTER-2024

Joining Infectious Grooves on all shows are French rock-blues duo, The Inspector Cluzo.

The-Inspector-Cluzo-promo
@theinspectorcluzo

The Inspector Cluzo deliver a full throttle explosion of soulful, funk-influenced classic rock intensity and manage to do so without a bass player! Their highly energetic live show is renowned the world over and they have been personally selected by Infectious Grooves to join them on their upcoming Australian tour.

Formed in the Gascony region of France in 2007 when their bassist never showed up for practice and therefore continuing with just guitar and drums, Inspector Cluzo have retained a fully DIY attitude in every aspect. Handling their own management, booking, label and promotion since inception, even amidst their massively and steadily growing fanbase over the years.

Plus to make the Infectious Grooves tour even bigger, we can reveal that Jay Weinberg has been announced as the new drummer for Suicidal Tendencies!

@jayweinberg

When I think of the culture and community of heavy music that I’ve loved and considered my creative home for 20 years, I think of SUICIDAL TENDENCIES: a foundational pillar and source of inspiration ever since I fell in love with punk, metal, and hardcore.   Having toured and played shows together all over the world, I’ve been so fortunate to become friends with my musical heroes who have been a part of this band’s incredible history. See you all in the pit!”Jay Weinberg

To celebrate, IG have announced a tour exclusive Suicidal Tendencies 6 Pack set as part of the upcoming Australian dates, where fans will be the first to see Jay hit the skins in ST mode – joined on stage by 2 current and former Suicidal Tendencies bassists –  none other than
Tye Trujillo, performing iconic ST anthems alongside his Dad, Robert.

Boasting an all-star lineup of incredible players, Infectious Grooves are set to unleash an insane performance that sees them play their first shows globally in 5 years and their first in Australia since playing at Soundwave Festival in 2008, 16 long years ago!

The 2024 incarnation of Infectious Grooves is more potent than ever. Featuring original members, Suicidal Tendencies frontman, Mike Muir, and guitarist Dean Pleasants who are both fresh from a sold-out tour of Australia last November that celebrated the 40th Anniversary of ST’s debut album.

They will be accompanied by none other than founding bassist of Infectious GroovesRobert Trujillo who is making a long-awaited comeback to Australia. Trujillo’s last visit was over a decade ago with his warlord bandmates in on of the biggest bands on the planet—Metallica!

Adding extra groove on guitar will be Dave Kushner, best known for being part of the platinum selling supergroup Velvet Revolver. Dave is also part of the OG Infectious Grooves team having appeared on the track, Punk It Up from the bands debut album.

Anchoring the whole thing down is drummer Jay Weinberg, making his first live appearance after 10 years with the iconic metal band, Slipknot

Formed in 1989 by Mike Muir and Robert Trujillo of the legendary Californian heavy hitters, Suicidal Tendencies, along with long serving ST guitarist Dean Pleasants and drummer Stephen Perkins of Janes Addiction, Infectious Grooves inject a potent mix of funk and groove into their sound which instantly captivated audiences with their cross-genre appeal. With a cheeky touch of goofy humour, they became a force to be reckoned with in the international scene, delivering 4 albums between 1991 and 2000 and forever cementing their iconic status among fans worldwide.

With musical pedigree like that, you’re guaranteed an incredible night of funk-metal mayhem when Infectious Grooves come to blitzkrieg the house.

EYEHATEGOD – Australian tour July 2024

Cover shot – EYEHATEGOD

EYEHATEGOD have become the high water mark when it comes to so called sludge metal, having birthed rock’s unholy bastards and inspiring multiple others with their combined sounds of southern rock, blues riffs and hardcore punk. Noting Black Flag, The Melvins and Black Sabbath as a domineering and significant influence to their sound today, they are the cornerstone for countless other sonic acolytes following in their fetid footsteps and have made themselves one of the most reputable and distinctive bands ever.

EYEHATEGOD-Australian-Tour-2024

EYEHATEGOD’s latest album ‘A History of Nomadic Behaviour’ and their most recent since their last Australian tour in 2019, is a blowtorch-distortion and blues-saturated combination of songs pierced with scarring pain and disconsolate fury. The album combines an unsettling, chaotic tone with a scathing, scabrous slab of cacophonous sensory overload that only EYEHATEGOD know how to convey.

Merging one form of chaos with another is GOATWHORE. Rampaging for now over a quarter of a century as purveyors of the most ruthless extreme metal is GOATWHORE circle back to Australia from the abyss with their trademark blend of death, black, thrash and sludge metal delivered with breathless intensity and an unrepentant bloodlust. Come bear witness the vile sonic territory that only these maniacs can churn out.

BENTHAM’S HEAD – ‘New Path’ single launch

Words – Clare
Photos – Mitch

Under the multicoloured festoon lights in the band room at The Catfish, EM attended the biggest little metal gig we’ve ever seen. Think of a massive arena event and shrink it down to fit in a dark and perfectly seedy shoebox and that was the Bentham’s Head New Path single launch tour presented by Big Vibe Creative. There was big band energy the whole night that emanated from a risen platform dusted with blue petals, adorned with string lights coiled in glass jars. The tight crew of die hard fans responded in turn to each set with enthusiastic albeit small mosh pits and even a Wall of Death. Saturday night in Melbourne’s northside, there was nothing but smiles, good vibes, and heavy uplifting metal riffs from some exceptional local talent.

Joining Bentham’s Head on this tour were Fall & Resist and Requite. The members of Requite stepped up onto the stage platform and looked down on their audience all with matching black metal panda eyes and gave a moody but energetic performance of the tracks Not Good Enough, Stone, Promise and Soliloquy from their self titled EP released in June last year. We were also treated to their new tracks Marred and Empty side which they performed for the first time live (at least the first time with an actual drummer). Good start to the night so far.

Fall & Resist followed the comparatively young band of Requite but with energy to match. Opening with Pride & Glory from their 2018 EP Fading Cinders, lead singer Frosty leaned into the mic to voice an observation ‘I saw some good stank face’ which is of course the highest compliment a band can get from their audience. Other tracks they played included Creators of Our Own Demise, Nothing But Pain, and As It All Starts to Fray from their Album Darkness of Now released in 2022. With the crowd and band sweating bullets and almost out of breath, they finished strong with the track Dying Without Scars from the 2016 release Buried Beneath.

For the main event of the night, Melbourne’s blackened sludge phenomenon, Bentham’s Head. This visceral performance of genre-bending metal included opened with the track Isle of the Dead and the very well-received single Blood, Salt & Ash. The showmanship of this band was continuously surprising with guitarist Rick Grimm perching himself up onto the amps and speakers like a riff-wailing gargoyle. The floor of the band room shook from the joyful moshing of the fans with one crowd member screaming out ‘LET’S FUCKING GO!’ To which the lead singer calmly replied ‘Let’s fucking go indeed.’ Of course, before the set was concluded Bentham’s Head performed their latest offering New Path which overflowed the room with wailing leads and crushing grooves. The attendees of the evening were left satisfied beyond a doubt.

ALPHA WOLF – Half Living Things Tour 2024

Cover shot – ALPHA WOLF

Bringing the noise firmly back in 2024, Australian behemoths ALPHA WOLF will embark on an Australian headline tour this August. Named for and celebrating their upcoming new album Half Living Things, the Half Living Things Australian Tour will continue the band’s explosive run of live shows of late along with some special international guests, including Ohio metalcore stalwarts THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, Texan metalcore trailblazers INVENT ANIMATE and Swedish modern heavy wielders THROWN rounding out this formidable lineup.

“We are insanely proud and honoured to be able to give Australia our biggest headliner to date. These are some of the most iconic venues in the country that we all grew up going to see some our favourite bands when we were younger, so to be able to play these rooms alongside a stacked bill of some international friends of ours is truly a dream come true.” – Alpha Wolf

Never ones to do anything by halves, ALPHA WOLF have relentlessly sharpened their trademark intensity against the odds over the years, from releasing their critically-acclaimed sophomore album A Quiet Place To Die amid the pandemic in 2020, to releasing a split EP, The Lost & The Longing, with Welsh rockers Holding Absence in 2022, and, as of 2024, ferociously approaching their third full-length album Half Living Things, due out on Friday 5 April via Greyscale Records and SharpTone Records.

Hinting at things to come via the track Bring Back The Noise, a neck-snapping party-starter, as well as the internet-breaking collab single Sucks 2 Suck with legendary rapper Ice-T, ALPHA WOLF will also imminently unveil another new cut from Half Living Things alongside announcing their upcoming headline run; the emphatic Whenever You’re Ready, a track soaked in heart-wrenching melodics and pounding instrumentation due out next week.

Launching their own curated festival CVLTFEST in 2022, ALPHA WOLF continue to powerfully fly the flag for their own incredible wares as well as the local heavy music scene and exciting international acts, with CVLTFEST returning last month for its second edition to critical acclaim, headlined by ALPHA WOLF themselves alongside friends Emmure (USA), Crossfaith (Japan), Ocean Grove, Paledusk (Japan), Ten56. (France), Diamond Construct, Crave Death and Vilify.

Ticking off their biggest North American run to date with Motionless in White in and tearing up multiple stages as part of the inaugural Knotfest Australia last year, ALPHA WOLF kicked off 2024 touring regionally supporting The Amity Affliction, and will embark later this month on a massive North American headline run, supported by Emmure, UnityTX and Chamber, before heading to the UK to appear at Download Festival alongside Queens Of The Stone Age, Fall Out Boy, Avenged Sevenfold and more.

Forming in 2005, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA have gone on to become a towering fixture in the metalcore scene, armed with their balanced blend of turbulence, eloquent lyricism and melodic sorcery. From securing six consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums Chat through to extensive tours across the globe, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA most recently showcased their prowess via their 2022 album Color Decay. In 2024, the band will return to Australia in following supporting Polaris on a national sold out tour in 2017, and also marking the band’s first tour down under since releasing The Act in 2019 and Color Decay.

INVENT ANIMATE

Progressive metalcore quartet INVENT ANIMATE certainly know how to turn heads and melt hearts with their deeply empathetic heavy creations. Deeply connective and laced with fluctuating moments of ambience, intensity and technical immersion, INVENT ANIMATE unveiled their fourth studio album, Heavener, in 2023, self-produced by the band alongside The Plot In You’s Landon Tewers and praised for its progressive elements and nuanced complexity.

Releasing their debut single greyout in 2021, Sweden’s THROWN have quickly become one of the hottest acts in the modern heavy scene, blending intense guitars with aggressive vocals and infectious arrangements. With a misanthropic sonic spine and a fresh take on the metalcore and surrounding realms, THROWN recently toured alongside Fit For A King and Invent Animate, with 2024 marking the first time ever that the band will tour Australia.

The stage at 170 Russell St the atmosphere was charged with electrifying energy as three dynamic bands took the stage. —Sienna Skies, Dream On Dreamer, and Of Mice & Men—took the spotlight, delivering an unforgettable night of music that left the audience spellbound.

Sienna Skies kicked off the evening with an explosion of energy that ignited the crowd from the get-go. Their synchronized jump moves and lead singer Thomas Pirozzi’s engaging banter set the tone for an electrifying night. Despite a minor hiccup caused by a kangaroo encounter on the road, the band’s resilience shone through as they delivered an awesome performance, introducing their new song, “Only Change Is Permanent,” and leaving the audience craving more with their melodic hard-core sound. This is a band I will be keen to see again.

Lead singer Marcel Gadacz’s commanding vocals and guest drummer Luke Weber’s electrifying rhythm kept the atmosphere charged. From the uplifting “Stay” to the adrenaline-fueled “Runaway,” Dream On Dreamer had the crowd singing along and moshing, they never disappoint to entertain me every time I see them.

Instantly recognizable tunes filled the air, prompting spontaneous head-bobbing and foot-tapping throughout the venue. It was a light-hearted moment of camaraderie, setting the stage for the electrifying performance yet to come from Of Mice & Men.

CROSSFAITH – Live at The Croxton Melbourne 2024

What a show, what an absolute banger of a show! Possibly the best show I’ve ever seen. Last night I had the good fortune of being able to see Japan’s Crossfaith accompanied by Paledusk and Future Static at the Croxton and let me tell you, I was blown away. I came into this show being familiar with two Crossfaith songs total and I was excited to see these acts in the best way to encounter someone new: live.

Future Static were the first to jump on stage, walking out to some RNB. Which, if I’m being honest, I didn’t like. No hate to RNB but it’s just not something that I have much of a connection with, and if I did, I’d write for everydayrnb.com. Immediately rubbed the wrong way, I was primed to hate everything the Melbourne quintet did, but boy would they turn that opinion around in a hurry.

They walked out and blasted into their first track Chemical Lobotomy. A high energy track that gives off real 2004 era Victory records vibes while still managing to feel new. Like a heavier version of Paramore, frontwoman Amariah Cook engaged the crowd with a very playful, jovial and downright friendly stage demeanor. For a moment I was lulled into thinking I was about to suffer through a set of emo revival tunes only to be blindsided by some proper heavy breaks and Amariah’s false chord screams reminding me of Bethlehem’s Yvonne Wilczynska. The highlight song in the set for me was their cover of Daddy Yankee’s Gasolina. The group clearly has a lot of hiphop/rnb music influence in their writing which I find often feels gimmicky when mixed with metal due to the huge cultural differences between the genres. But their arrangement of this cover really felt like a synthesis of the genres common ground which made for a standout in the set. Their drummer Jackson Trudel’s playing was tighter than my jeans were in high school and both Ryan Qualizza and Jack Smith played some interesting octave style riffs. I couldn’t quite make out if they were doing jumps on the fretboard or using an octave pedal but either way it sounded cool. Future Static is a young group with a lot of talent and worth checking out if you’re a fan of more modern metalcore sounds and open to a touch of genre mixing. I can definitely see them find footing in the future as a gateway band for converting pop fans over to the dark side and for that they have my support.

Okay so the next band is Paledusk and fuck me, if you haven’t seen Paledusk do it. I’d never heard the name Paledusk before entering the building but they are now on my “must see every time they’re in town” list. These guys walked out to the opening of Lose Yourself by Eminem but as they entered the stage, it turned out to be a sample as part of their own arrangement intro which I found to be novel. The Japanese beasts exploded with their first song Area PD and won me over faster than a coal industry lobbyist wins over a politician. It was heavy, frantic and chaotic as fuck with a big dose of zero fucks given attitude. Tempo and groove changes happening so often it felt like I was in a tumble dryer made of riffs. The musical energy was matched by their stage presence with every member of the band barely staying attached to the ground. For the duration of the set, lead guitarist Daisuke Ehara in particular was doing aerial kicks constantly without missing a single note. Which was amazing, because the high tempo djenting was technical enough to leave a lesser guitarist rendered immobile just to keep time.

There are so many elements of the Paledusk experience that you could consider to be the “appealing” element but I’ll list what really grabbed me. Firstly, their genre melting was way more in depth than other contemporary acts. Their music wasn’t just metal(core) with a touch of other genres to be weird and quirky. Every song had deep and intricate influences from hyper pop, rap, hip hop, breakbeat, house, drum n bass to ravecore and likely a hundred other things I didn’t detect. But none of these influences overstayed their welcome or felt gimmicky which I find to the biggest problem with many other bands that try the same thing. Second, their crowd engagement is unmatched. They aren’t just physically embodying the chaos of their music; they’re pulling that chaos out of the crowd. Encouraging people to let loose and setting a leading example of loose letting. I checked out their records after the show to see how they compare and it’s not even close. Their records are good but their live show really is something else. Paledusk are a must see live group and I highly doubt it’s going to be long before they start selling out stadiums and I wouldn’t be surprised if festival headlines are in their future too.

Finally it was time for Crossfaith, the only group of the night I was even slightly familiar with. Crossfaith is definitely a band that tries to deliver more than just a performance, but an experience. 20 minutes prior to their performance, during the changeover, they played some electronic music over the speakers with a computer-generated voice announcing every few minutes how soon until the show. I’m a big fan of this more holistic and immersive approach to performance and I hope more bands take a page out of this book. The lights finally drop and the voice announces the show will begin. Terufumi Tamano struts onto the stage and is an absolute hype beast! He mobilizes the crowd and harvests the energy the previous bands cultivated. As the music ramps up the rest of the band enters and it’s absolutely on. Crossfaith’s signature blend of electronica and metalcore are a real sight to behold with a lightshow pain-stakingly synced to every beat and note of the performance there wasn’t a moment in the set that wasn’t punctuated with a visual display that amplified the experience. The evening is filled with moments of dramatic poses, backlit by red glows and blinding strobes.

Right from the get go we’ve got crowd surfing and circle pit calls and singer Kenta Koie can barely be kept behind the stage barrier while he gives the front row a show to remember. One song later Terufumi is crowd surfing while screaming his heart out! The next we’ve got a wall of death where I spied a guy where a shirt that said “free mosh hugs” who naturally I embraced for a wall of hugs (shout out to that guy). My absolute favourite song from their set was Gimme Danger which was impossible not to get in the pit for. Its hard groove and forward pulse was equal parts club banger and fresh metal riffs. The crowd couldn’t decide if they wanted to mosh or muzz. One of the songs that I unfortunately didn’t catch the name of had a kind of latin influenced groove and the band called for the crowd to get their tarps off. Suddenly only half the room was wearing shirts, gender inclusive, and swinging them over head and if that isn’t a goddman party move I don’t know what is. The only fault I found with the performance was the use of the overdone trope of a planned encore. We know you’re coming back our, there’s 20 mins left of your allotted set time, that time side stage could have been another song. But when they returned, we were treated to a bang up performance of their prodigy cover Omen. Crossfaith ask the question “What if electronica was heavy and what if you could dance to metal” or alternatively “what if all of the MDMA I have ever taken was haunted” and then deliver that answer in an incredibly polished package.

I came out of this show sweating like a motherfucker with a fat lip and ear-to-ear grin. I absolutely can not wait to see all three of these bands again and you should 100% go out of your way to see them live because their records are like a fart in the wind compared to what they deliver live.

Thanks to the Croxton Bandroom crew for having us and a special thanks to Dallas Does PR for arranging access.
