BREW REVIEW – Old Wives Ales – Old Man Yells At Cloud

If your brew has a Simpsons reference in the name, you know I am going to try it.

Brought to you by Old Wives Ales, this NEIPA pours cloudy with a moderate head.

Even though there is a healthy dose of Australian and American hops, this beer sets itself apart by focusing on the flavour of the hops rather than the bitterness.

In a market that is saturated with overly bitter, hop forward beverages, Old Man Yells At Cloud is a refreshing change.

BEN G’s – TOP 5 ALBUMS 2018

 1. No Fun At All – Grit

10 years on from their previous release, you could say there was a little bit of pressure on this album to not totally suck.  First listen, I was relatively impressed, by the third it was up there as one of my favourite albums of theirs.  It has all the fire and hooks that brought them to prominence ‘back in the day’, with an added air of vulnerability and retrospection that really strikes a chord.

2. Alice In Chains – Rainier Fog

Another solid effort from these guys.  They’re always trying a few new things, while still having it undeniably sounding like Alice in chains.  Riffs aplenty, vocal harmonies on point, as always, an all round solid rock album.

3. Cold Ground – Destroy The Illusion Of Peace

This is one corker of an album.  These guys had solid beginnings with their first couple of releases, but have stepped things up infinitely on this one.  Passionate lyrics, some of the best riffs I’ve heard in a long time, and a groove that keeps on giving.  A must for punk and hardcore fans alike.

4. Rivers Of Nihil – Where Owls Know My Name

I’d never heard of these guys before my mate posted about them and, to be honest, I was just expecting to hear another generic death metal band.  Wow, was I wrong?  This album is chock full of everything that makes metal great.  The drums along are epic, ranging from up tempo, blast beats, and double kick that’d revive you from a coma.  The whole album is laced with atmosphere, which I just love, whether it’s in combonation with the huge riffs or in the quieter parts of the album.  Great ebbing and flowing of intensity and calm, and any metal band that makes saxophone solos feel oh so right deserves some major praise.

5. The Prodigy – No Tourists

I was particularly underwhelmed upon my first listen or two, much to my buddy’s disbelief, who is an even bigger fanboy that I am.  After a few rotations I was on board, though.  I’m all for albums/songs being growers, those ones often becoming favourites.  Overall, it’s another solid effort in a diverse discography.

Notable mentions:

Rolo Tomassi – Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It

Pennywise – Never Gonna Die

Greyhaven – Empty Black

INTERVIEW – JUDAS WOLF

-Interview by Ben G

Judas Wolf have just released their debut record, ‘Snow Turns Red’, which they officially launched in December.  We spoke with vocalist Meg to get the lowdown on all the latest happenings in the Judas Wolf camp.

Tell us a little about how the band came about.

Nicko and I had both been asked to start a band by a mutual friend, but it fell through. At the time, Brett was also chatting to our friend Emillie (who is now playing in our sibling band Tempest) about doing something, as he was looking to play guitar in a band as opposed to writing riffs and then playing bass. They reached out to Nicko and myself, but Emillie had some other commitments – so we reached out to Yells, who had just started learning bass! And we knew Brian would be a perfect fit on drums. He had been sailing with Sea Shepherd for years and was ready to get back into playing music now that he’s living on land! We’re pretty much five best friends eating pizza, hanging out, making music and learning together.

Can you explain what the title of your record, ‘Snow Turns Red’ means to you and what some of the inspirations behind the tracks were?

“Snow turns red” comes from a line in our song, Ghost. For context: “Induced panic, killed as they fled. Angel of murder, the snow turns red”.

Ghost is a song about the namesake of our band. Ghost was the name given to someone known as the Judas Wolf. I often like to explain this if we’re playing to a crowd who mostly haven’t seen us play before. A Judas Wolf is used as a method of culling wolf packs in British Columbia and in the South Selkirk region in Canada (and likely many other areas…).

In a nutshell, Ghost was captured, sedated and collared with a tracking device. He was then released back into the wild to find his pack, unknowingly leading humans directly to them. Once reunited with his family, helicopters fly overhead with snipers on board who kill off the pack, leaving Ghost alive to roam, alone, until he finds a new pack to join – the process repeats. By simply living and trying to find companionship, Ghost unknowingly betrayed those he was bonded with and innocently played a part in their demise.

Natural predators are often scapegoated and the culling of them has long been a cruel and ineffective solution to the decrease in populations of prey animals. In the case of these murdered wolves, we’re talking about Mountain Caribou whose habitat is being decimated by land clearing – by humans. It’s a bigger issue than we have the time or space to discuss here, but I warmly welcome anyone who wants to chat and hear more about it to come and find me at a show for a friendly conversation.

The record sounds pretty huge.  How did you go about deciding who to record with and where, and how was the recording process?

Oh wow, thanks! Yells and Brett have both recorded with Mike Deslandes in the past and I’d heard lots of great things about him from other friends who have, too. We all felt really comfortable on these recommendations and experiences! We recorded at The Black Lodge in Brunswick East (Melbourne).

The recording process was really comfortable, fun and overall such an encouraging experience. Mike was full of great suggestions and kind words, but also no nonsense and just really helpful – I felt very comfortable and trusting and would happily record with him again. We got everything done in three days, with the exception of I think the vocals for one song, plus crew vocals, which were all done one night after work a few days later.

What were some particular highlights and challenges you all encountered?

When we were starting the band, a few people told me to just do it with people I wanted to hang out with and, honestly, it’s some of the best advice I’ve ever been given. Recording with people I love, trust and respect, who grant me the same, was such a fun, encouraging and rewarding experience. Figuring out how to play the Jurassic Park theme on the melodica was a personal highlight. Everyone pretty much smashed their individual parts. A challenge for me was warming up in a room where everyone could hear me – I felt pretty self conscious! So I cheated a little and used a first take of the first song as kind of an extended warm up.

Your Bandcamp page states “Judas Wolf advocates for a vegan lifestyle / For all animals / For the planet.”  Can you tell us a little bit about the band’s history with veganism / animal activism and planet conservation?

Thanks for asking about it! If our collective veganism were a person, they’d be a septuagenarian. I don’t want to speak on behalf of anyone else here, because of course our experiences may all be different, but hardcore had a big influence on me in terms of showing me the ways my lifestyle can align with my values. Animal rights and many social issues have been introduced to me through friends and through bands that had important things to say.

Brett and Yells have both been advocates for justice and rights for all beings for as long as I’ve known them. They have both had a big impact on me personally for many years, for which I’m so grateful.

Nicko started and continues to run a community initiative called Scab Duty, which focuses on reducing and eliminating single use plastics, educating others, partnering with other local groups and councils and takes action with clean ups. Saving animals by cleaning up their habitats! And doing what we can to stop waste at its source – us.  Nicko in recent years has also been sailing with Sea Shepherd.

Brian and I are both lucky enough to have full times roles in these areas – Brian in marine conservation with Sea Shepherd and myself with animal protection organisation Animals Australia. I had been doing bits and pieces with a couple of different groups and when a position came up, I was very kindly recommended to Animals Australia. Brian started volunteering with Sea Shepherd almost a decade ago, as an engineer, and is now responsible for the entire fleet. He has quite a long history in animal rights prior to that, too.

Another year has just gone by, can you list a few of your favourite releases from 2018?

Bystander EP

Tempest – Self titled

Outright – Holler

Wake of Humanity – Fight/Resist

With the 7” release now under your belt, at least for the Melbourne chapter, what do you folks have planned for the near future?

We’ve got a few new songs almost finished and who knows, maybe by the end of next year we’ll have a full length… not too sure but that’d be cool to look forward to. We all have busy lives with commitments in addition to this and we’re doing it because we want to and it’s fun, so although we’re motivated, we’re not about rushing things.

We’re hoping to get some more interstate shows happening towards the end of summer! Adelaide and Sydney at least. We’ve also had a kind offer for a few shows in Europe, so we’re looking at the logistics of that! We’ll keep everyone posted of course, so keep an eye on our social media (@judaswolf).

REVIEW – MITCH’s TOP 5 ALBUMS OF 2018

1. Rivers OF Nihil – Where Owls Know My Name

I have been a fan of this band for some time and always enjoyed their consistency and quality.

in 2018 Rivers Of Nihil decided to go all out and show the world how taking a risk can really pay off. This album displays a willingness to step outside the boundaries of the genre and showcases just how technically skilled each member of the band really is.

2. At the Gates – To Drink From The Night Itself

I got onto this album late in 2018, but it immediately resonated with me. These metal veterans from Sweden have produced another insanely groovy album with songs that get stuck in your head for days. This album will have you singing along and air guitaring from beginning to end.

3. Behemoth – I Loved You At Your Darkest

This is yet another stomping release from this monstrous band. Behemoth to me are an all round package of quality music, artwork and video. Each time I hear that there is new Behemoth on the way, I not only look forward to the album, but the cover art and no doubt the blasphemy heavy music videos.

4. PORTAL – ION

My top 5 would not be complete without a band from home.

Portal are a polarizing band with a die hard fanbase. Portal’s albums are not really made up of songs, its more a collision of sound that feels intentionally jarring. Portal are not a easy band to listen to by any means, but I celebrate their unrelenting charge into experimental metal.

5. High On Fire – Electric Messiah

Onto their 8th studio album, this band continues to smash out infectiously groovy metal. Even though this album has a quick pace, it is loaded with intricate riffs and stomping guitar solos. A hell of a effort from another veteran Metal band.

VIDEO – MITCH’s – TOP 5 METAL CLIPS

1. Fit For An Autopsy – “Black Mammoth”

This song and video doesn’t pull any punches, it hits you right in the face with brutal facts about the Dakota Access Pipeline and the protests at Standing Rock.

The power of the music combined with the topic really resonated with me and made me think deeper about effect that big business has on the world. This song also has one of the best break downs ever!

2. Job For A Cowboy – “Tarnished Gluttony”

I absolutely love the intensity of the video, the first time I watched it, I spent the entire time trying to figure out what the hell is actually going on!

The HD video combined with great direction and acting kept my attention for the long running time of over nine minutes.

3. Thy Art Is Murder – “Holy War”

This list would not be complete without mentioning one of the biggest Australian metal acts. In this video nothing is sacred, the band shows exactly why this track is called Holy War.

4. Machine Head – “From This Day”

Machine Head went head first into Nu Metal with this video and I am not ashamed to say this album was the sound track of my 1999.

5. Deftones – “My Own Summer (shove it)”

I always loved the concept of this video, standing on top of shark cages while jamming the fuck out. I assumed it was shot on green screen, but was impressed to find out the band were actually filmed while floating in the middle of a bay, complete with animatronic sharks.

WATCH WEDNESDAY – John Wick – Carl F. Bucherer Manero AutoDate

John is a man of focus, commitment and sheer will…

Keanu Reeve’s is no stranger to action roles, yet John Wick is definitely one of his more memorable characters.

John is a retired hit man that is drawn back into the life when a crime bosses son and his posse of thugs break into John’s house, steal his car and kill his dog.

John then unleashes the full fury of his skill set on everyone involved and anyone stupid enough to get in his way.

The watch is teased a few times early on in the movie as it is worn on the inside of his wrist. Wearing a watch in this position is popular with military personnel as the face can be clearly viewed in tactical situations.

We first get a good look at the watch when John is suiting up before his first outing.

The watch is a Carl F. Bucherer’s Manero AutoDate in a steel finish, featuring a white dial and black alligator strap.

Even though this is considered a “entry level” watch from CFB, it still comes in with a hefty price tag of around $3000 AUD.

Later on in the movie we see a second CFB watch, worn by Willem Dafoe’s character. It was interesting to find out that this was no coincidence as the movies director Chad Stahelski is a brand Ambassador for  Carl F. Bucherer.

VIDEO – BEN G’s – TOP 5 METAL CLIPS

1. Slipknot – “Before I Forget”

This clip is slick. I love the tight shots, which not only obviously serve firstly to hide the identities of the band members, but additionally throw a unique perspective in the mix to what we’re usually offered.

2. Metallica – “The Memory Remains”

I love this clip, it’s just so damn Rock n’ Roll, which was perfect for where they were at. Creative, punchy and fun, can’t ask for more than that.

3. Slayer – “Bloodline”

I was once given some advice that something may have been done already, but it hasn’t been done by you. I like that this clip takes the simple concept of a band playing in a room, keeps the momentum high with the erratic choice of lighting and editing, then adds in an extra element to keep the viewer on their toes.

4. Machine Head – “Ten Ton Hammer”

This clip is pretty trashy, but it somehow works. Gritty and a little bit odd, just like the song. 5. Parkway Drive – The Void These guys have made some pretty cool, creative clips over the years, but this one takes the cake. Everything in this clip is well thought out; lighting, compositions and narrative are all on point. What really pushes it over the edge for me are the transitions. Super abrupt, but with such precision, it keeps the tension and anticipation building throughout each scene. A really impressive cinematic short, pushing the limits of what is capable and expected in the music world.

BREW REVIEW – Sierra Nevada – Ovila Abbey Quad with Plums

Kicking things off with a little throw back with a brew from earlier in the year,

Brewed in California in conjunction with the monks from the Abbey of New Clairaux, this beer pours dark with a generous head.

For a dark beer that with a alcohol content of 10.2% its surprisingly not as boozy as you would expect. Initially you get caramel and malty tones, yet the dark fruit of the plum come through at the end to give this beer a fairly decent finish.

It’s good to see big brewers like Sierra Nevada stepping out with collaborations like this.

The Stats:

Style:        Abbey Quadrupel

Brewed:   America

ALC:         10.2%

Brew Origin:

A Quadruple is a Belgian-style ale with a bold flavor, dark colour and high alcohol content.

Quadruples typically present a dark body of deep reds and ruby browns and feature a rich malty palate.

VIDEO – The Silent Life – Rivers of Nihil

Rivers of Nihil hit us with a new video for “The Silent Life” from their epic 2018 release – Where Owls Know My Name.

This band have taken things to a whole other level with this record, if you haven’t given it a listen, get onto it now!

INTERVIEW – FEELING THEIR SPIRIT – A DAY WITH NO FUN AT ALL

It’s a Monday afternoon, I’m just dusting myself off and killing time before the No Fun At All gig at the Bendigo Hotel that night.  In a YOLO (are the kids still saying that?) moment, I decide to message the band’s Facebook page to see if I could pop down a bit earlier before the show to take a few photos while they soundcheck.  To my delightful surprise, I get a reply soon after saying that’s cool with them.

I arrive at the venue, find myself a corner in the beer garden and inform my mystery band member, who soon turns out to be drummer Kjell, of my arrival.  Moments later, singer Ingemar and lead guitarist Fredrik pop out and make their way over to the other end of the beer garden and sit down with a few mates.  Feeling like my shameless level needs to be bumped up a notch, I approach them, tell them I need some friends and ask to join, to which they oblige.

A little bit of time goes by, we’re joined by bassist Stefan along the way, and the conversation rolls along, from the current good streak of weather, to overseas music festivals, pioneering bands attempting to resurrect their careers and the varying success of those moves.

The time comes for the band members to head inside to soundcheck, so I follow suit, introduce myself to Kjell and proceed to spy on them on stage from all angles of the room, manage to fit in a few portraits of Stefan upon request, and tap my toes while they do their thing.  After soundcheck is all wrapped up, Kjell asks me if I’m happy, to which I reply “absolutely” and we get chatting about the current tour, sucking nearby Ingemar into the conversation as well.

It always intrigues, and sometimes puzzles me, as to which bands get brought out here and which get overlooked, especially those that one might find to be an obvious choice *cough*whyhasnoonebroughtbadreligionbackhereinsixyears*cough*.  It was really interesting to get some insight and hear about how the band were super keen to tour here and ended up asking a contact from previous tours to put them in touch with someone who could make it happen.

The conversation then moves towards their latest album and I try to strike a fine balance between keeping my composure and letting them know how freakin’ awesome the record is.  Kjell mentions that they were trying to get back to the vibe of their first few albums.  When I cautiously point out that I feel there are even some elements from their divisive State Of Flow album, both Kjell and Ingemar are able to look back on that period with some fond memories to counteract some of the negative ones at the time, when the band were changing their sound and on the verge of a break up.  Ingemar asks me if I like that album, to which I reply that I do and he agrees that so does he, while Kjell tells me that he feels his drumming was at its peak during that period.

It’s finally showtime and the band waste no time, kicking into Believers and setting the place off.  The next nearly hour and a half is chock full of old classics, including Perfection, Suicide Machine, unexpected oldie Funny?, Beat ‘Em Down and, of course, Master Celebrator.  We also get given a healthy dose of tracks off the latest record, Grit; No Fun Intended, The Humdrum Way and Spirit, amongst a few others.  All equally go down a treat and it’s clear that this current lineup shows no sign of slowing down and that this tour was long overdue.

Of course, no punk rock show is complete without that one dickhead who is too big and strong and doesn’t take any not-so-subtle hints that perhaps he shouldn’t repeatedly invade the stage, knock drinks over and nearly break half of the band’s shit.  After the show, the band members linger around the room and oblige every sweaty fan who wants to shake their hand, get an autograph or have a photo with them.

What a bloody great day.  Meet a band you love, find out they’re not jerks, whatch them smash out a great show and leave with a few new friends under your belt.

Yes, Fun At All.
