MAKE THEM SUFFER – ‘Ghost Of Me’

Cover shot – MAKE THEM SUFFER

The new sonic chapter for Make Them Suffer continues in 2023, with the Perth metalcore outfit today unveiling a ravenous new single Ghost Of Me, out now via Greyscale Records in Australia and SharpTone Records for the rest of the world.

Make Them Suffer - Ghost Of Me (3000 x 3000)

A high-octane outing injected with ferocious energy and a sharp balance between heavy guitars and soaring choruses, Ghost Of Me echoes and advances the vibrant new Make Them Suffer sonic territory previously witnessed on the band’s explosive 2022 single Doomswitch.

“We are thrilled to announce the release of our latest single, Ghost Of Me,” shares vocalist Sean Harmanis of the brand new MTS release. “The new song marks a significant step in the evolutionary process of MTS’ sound, showcasing our dedication to exploring new sonic territories. Designed to complement high-energy live performances, this single promises to be a visually explosive and unforgettable experience for our followers.”

“Ghost Of Me is about feeling a sense of betrayal and abandonment,” Harmanis continues, “and the negative and flawed emotions that come with that experience; bitterness, resentment and anger.”

MTS promo 2023

Following a long break away from music due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Make Them Suffer returned with a blazing bang in 2022, officially welcoming new member Alex Reade to the fold as backup vocalist and keyboardist, releasing the behemoth single Doomswitch, playing a sold out tour in North America supporting Bad Omens, and performing a completely sold out headline Australian run in support of their new material.

Releasing their first single via the dream team of Greyscale Records and SharpTone Records in 2023, Make Them Suffer will return to the States this September and October as part of Parkway Drive‘s huge Monsters Of Oz Tour, celebrating Parkway Drive‘s 20th anniversary as a banh an all-Aussie bill alongside The Amity Affliction and Northlane. But before they embark on yet another overseas adventure, Make Them Suffer are also imminently set to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of their debut album, performing 2012’s Neverbloom in full for the first time ever this May and June. Melbourne, Perth and Newcastle shows are already sold out with Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide selling fast.

And amongst their anniversary tour dates, Make Them Suffer will also appear at both the Wollongong and Frankston editions of UNIFY Off The Record before heading to Darwin for the first time ever on Saturday 10 June for TerrorLoud 2 alongside StarveSedativeHarrowayWe Burn Bridges and more.

THY ART IS MURDER - Godlike cover

The band have also shared their devastating new single, “Join Me In Armageddon“. Opening with a foreboding riff that feels like you’re being marched into the arms of evil, heed the warning of Thy Art when they advise to “dress warm for nuclear winter”.

“Join Me In Armageddon is a song that started off with one idea, self destruction,” says guitarist Andy Marsh. “I suppose throughout this record we have ended up touching on a lot of themes that came to the fore these last few years, for us, and maybe you as well. Loss, distance, doubt, pressure and tension have made their way through our lives and now are intertwined and immortalized in this record, Godlike.”

SLEEP TOKEN – Melbourne Ritual 2023

Photos – Mitch

On April 30th we gathered in worship for Sleep Token‘s Melbourne offering. This was only the second time that Sleep Token has performed in Melbourne but it was their first Australian headline tour. Sleep Token has always had a loyal fan base, yet in the last few months, their popularity has skyrocketed with over two million monthly listeners on Spotify and their track ‘The Summoning‘ amassing over thirty million streams alone.

The first release of tickets for this tour sold out in record time with each show being upgraded to larger venues across the country. For Melbourne, this meant that the Northcote Theatre would play host to the evening’s Ritual.

A line formed around the block and as doors opened the herd quickly moved inside to secure their vantage points. As there were no supports, people waited eagerly for over an hour for Sleep Token to play.

At the stroke of 9 pm, the lights went down and a deafening roar from the crowd engulfed the venue. The intro to ‘Chokehold‘ commenced and lead vocalist Vessel entered the stage in moody low light and a cloud of otherwordly pink smoke.

When the chorus dropped the audience screamed ‘You’ve got me in a chokehold‘ and proceeded to break out in a heavy mosh pit in the center of the venue floor. As the first track came to a close, the intro to ‘The Summoning‘ began, bringing the excitement to a fever pitch. Things then calmed with the song ‘Hypnosis‘, providing an opportunity for their drummer simply known as ii to truly shine.

The chill vibe continued with tracks ‘Like That‘ and ‘Nazareth‘, a deep cut from Sleep Token’s 2017 EP – TWO. Two new tracks followed from their upcoming record ‘Granite‘ and ‘Aqua Rega‘.

There was a brief interlude, the lights went down and the intro for ‘Atlantic‘ began, a fan-favorite. Atlantic was accompanied by ‘Alkanine‘ and ‘The Love You Want‘ all taken from their critically acclaimed 2nd studio album – This Place Will Become Your Tomb. Closing out this run of songs was ‘Higher‘ where Vessel treated us to a deathcore style ‘BLEGH‘ something that later became a talking point of the evening.

Concluding their set, Sleep Token left the stage leaving the crowd hungering for more ‘ONE MORE SONG! ONE MORE SONG!’ bellowed through the venue. Vessel unexpectantly returned to the stage and treated us to a solo performance of their latest single ‘DYWTYLM‘ making it a world-first live premiere.

Performances like this make you appreciate the impact the band has on it’s followers. All throughout the showing, arms raised up from the crowd with hands grasping the atmosphere around the band to form a connection, and when the evening truly completed, faces were flushed with tears.

Sleep Token will head to Adelaide next and wrap up their sold-out tour in Perth.

A huge thanks to the crew at the Northcote Theatre and Destry All Lines for having us and special thanks to Dallas Does PR for arranging media access.

HEALTH – Downunder June 2023

Cover shot – HEALTH

LA-based industrial rock band HEALTH returns to Australia for the first time since 2016 this June, with a string of shows to match the increasingly dark trajectory their experimental music has taken in recent years. In addition to their previously announced appearance at Hobart’s enigmatic Dark Mofo event, the band now announces two mainland headline shows in Brisbane and Sydney with special guest Striborg.

HEALTH FLYER
@_health_

HEALTH’s 2020 and 2022 ‘Disco4’ two part album series saw them teaming up with a frankly mind-blowing array of artists from all across heavy, hip-hop, and electronic music spectrums – splicing their own unique sounds with everyone from Lamb of God, JPEGMafia, Poppy, 100 Gecs, Ghostemane and Nine Inch Nails, to name a few. Couple this expanse of collaboration with their contribution to the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack and a superb level of meme-centric engagement with their online fanbase and stocks in HEALTH have gone steadily supersonic.

2023 - Health

Slowly building from Tasmanian obscurity since 1997, Striborg is the solo project of one Russell Menzies. Rooted in low-fi black metal, over the course of his near 30 full-length albums Striborg’s evolution into industrial, dark ambient and new-wave sounds is still ongoing and wholly unique. Live appearances from this man have been sparse to say the least – with these dates to be his first in both Sydney and Brisbane.

15.06 – Crowbay, Sydney – tickets

16.06 – The Triffid, Brisbane – tickets

18.06 – Dark Mofo, Hobart* – tickets

DEAFHEAVEN – Australian Tour

Cover shot – DEAFHEAVEN

American shoegaze-meets-black-metal trailblazers DEAFHEAVEN have announced their most extensive Australian & New Zealand headline tour to date, scheduled for May & June 2023.

deafheaven-tour-poster

Their first visit in over 4 years will see them play in Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne, as well as Wellington, Auckland and finally wrapping up the tour at Hobart’s Dark Mofo. The band will play multiple shows in Melbourne & Perth, as well as their biggest ever headline shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.

The band are touring in support of their acclaimed new album ‘Infinite Granite.’ The record features some of their finest melodic songwriting to date, whilst exploring less intense sonic territory than their previous records.

From the uplift of ‘Great Mass of Color’ to the brooding ‘In Blur’, the record is awash with lush soundscapes conjured by the band and anchored by singer George Clarke’s startlingly impressive melodic tenor and multi part harmonies.

21_06_16_Deafheaven_LosAngeles_RobinLaananen_0581FA

Their live show continues to be a juxtaposition of epic proportions and this tour will be no exception, with five diverse studio albums to draw from. The band will also celebrate 10 years of their seminal ‘blackgaze’ record ‘Sunbather’ by performing it in full exclusively at Dark Mofo Festival.

Joining the tour for all east coast shows will be Australian alternative rock quintet Closure in Moscow. With their recent single ‘Better Way’ the cult Melbourne band have signalled a return to their melodic, hook-laden roots and will release their new album ‘Soft Hell’ in late 2023.

Also in support will be Melbourne band RUN, featuring frontman Lochlan Watt (triple j’s The Racket, Nuclear Summer, Colossvs, Thy Art Is Murder). Their new single ‘Iris’ (a cover of the Goo Goo Dolls classic) is an intense collision of black metal, 90s alt rock, post-metal and metalcore – a perfect fit for this bill.

Opening in Melbourne will be Suldusk, whose gothic-acoustic sound has earned them a worldwide following purely by word of mouth.

Support in Perth comes from doom-jazz quartet Tangled Thoughts of Leaving. Known for their fiery and intense live performances, they will be releasing their first new material in 5 years in the coming weeks.

THE XCERTS – Learning How To Live and Let Go

Cover shot – THE XCERTS

Alternative three piece The XCERTS today announce their new album Learning How To Live and Let Go out August 18th via UNFD. The announcement comes alongside the release of new single Jealousy.

The-Xcerts-album-art

Learning How To Live and Let Go is the band’s 5th studio album to date and marks their long awaited return. The band, who have have released two tracks this year so far – GIMME and Ache featuring Sam Carter – are entering a new era, evolving to a more production heavy output, adding a wider range of influences to their arsenal and gaining the confidence to move on from the sound they’ve cultivated over the previous four albums.

“The album is rooted in drama, ego, love, lust, despair, alcohol, euphoria, anxiety, comedy, modern living, sex and friendship but the overarching theme is that of acceptance. I was involved in a prolonged toxic relationship and the fallout from that when it came to a head, led me to indulge in a pretty fuzzed out lifestyle to deafen the noise in my head. Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast at times but breaking point wasn’t enough, I needed more of the unhealthy and as many recreational distractions as I could get,” XCERTS frontman Murray Macleod stated.

The-Xcerts-promo-shot
@thexcerts

He continued, “When I kind of came to after this period in my life, I didn’t walk away from it with a huge Hollywood-esq epiphany, I just felt somewhat quietly healed. The album isn’t about letting go of one person, relationship or situation in particular, it’s about learning how to live without feeling like a prisoner in your own skin and learning how to let go of the parts of you that cling on desperately, only to simmer and hurt. Don’t get me wrong, I’m deeply flawed but self acceptance and letting life ride is my key to finding inner peace and that exists somewhere between calm and chaos…maybe?”

The album pre-order and announcement is accompanied by the release of Jealousy, another impressive new cut and turn of direction for the band who have already shown this year that they’ve got so many more exciting things to come. The track is released with a new music video that sits alongside the band’s previous two outputs and adds another exciting dimension to what’s to come for the band this year.

On the making of JealousyMacleod commented: “Jealousy was the last song written for the record and I’m so glad it made the cut! I took a lot of inspiration from Hole and Weezer and was looking for an arena-ready, alt rock number that took heavy influence from the 90’s but wanted to pull the rug from people’s feet during the outro. We thought it would be cool to ditch the guitars at the end and add 808’s instead of going down the more traditional route. Lyrically, it’s very much rooted in ego, pride and ‘doom-scrolling’. I didn’t think I was a jealous guy until I was involved in a tremendously unhealthy situation with a partner. Couple that with spending too much time on the Internet, and all hell breaks loose!”

The band have also announced details of their October UK headline tour, starting in Southampton on Tuesday 3rd October and finishing up in Aberdeen and Glasgow on the 13th and 14th respectively.

The-Xcerts-tour

In January, the band released the first single from this new iteration of the band, the brash & bombastic GIMME, which was widely praised by critics and described as “a furiously catchy, superbly punchy return” by CLASH Magazine. This was followed by the gloriously optimistic Ache featuring Sam Carter of Architects, described by DIY as “another lesson in alt-pop brilliance” the track adds a new depth as well as a new found sense of fun that the band have discovered in spades whilst writing this new album. A brand new attitude for a brand new chapter of the band.
